Have a look at this absolutely gorgeous exotic wood competition chess set. This is not something you will find at your local hobby or craft store, but a unique handmade hardwood piece of art. The proof is in the pudding.......

The playing surface itself is constructed of solid and stunning American walnut burl and curly maple woods. The top playing level measures 18" x 18". The bottom level of the board measures 24 3/4" x 24 3/4"" and is made from red gum and Peruvian walnut. I cut "Drueke" style grooves into the bottom and a chamfer edge profile around the perimeter. The border is nice and wide, able to sit retired players and/or a chess clock. The overall thickness is the board is approximately 1.75" The squares on this board measure the full competition sized 2 1/4" by 2 1/4". The overall dimensions are 24 3/4 x 24 3/4"" x 1 3/4". The board has been finished with three coats of semi-gloss polyurethane all around.

The chess pieces are hand carved from boxwood and highly figured sheeshamwood, triple weighted with felt bottoms. Each piece was meticulously handcrafted and finished. Two extra queens are included in the set for proper chess play. The pieces in this set are beefy. The kings measure a full 4" tall with a 1 5/8" base. The piece sets fit nicely on both sets of boards.
