This is a beautiful, petite box elder decorative bowl measuring approximately 5.5" in diameter by 5.5 inches in height.
I rough turned a bowl from a solid piece of box elder (also called blood elder).
The block was "wet", so I turned it thick, and as most woods do, it warped and developed a crack on one side while drying out.
I tested the moisture content recently and determined it was ready to re-chuck and get back on the lathe for a second turning. I was able to seal and minimize the crack, which was my primary concern, and remove the warping to get it back into shape. The crack remains visible, but not nearly as unsightly as it was, and I believe the piece is presentable and chock full of character.
Sanded down to a glass-like 600 grit, signed and dated on the bottom. Here's a 360 degree view of the bowl as it is now.
Finished this one with salad bowl wax. If you have questions, don't hesitate.
